Travis Paterson, Boys will be boys (detail)
Here's a snapshot of the 'Hatched: 2009 National Graduate Show', currently on at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.
Like with any student exhibition, there's a staggering mix of topics and inspiration: from chewing gum left on university property to Lonely Planet hikes to weird Google searches involving giraffes.

Nathan Peake, Yellow Emperor
I especially like Nathan Peake's contribution (above), which looks like a detailed photograph but is an oil-based enamel on composition board. The way it catches the slippery, reflective look of shiny surfaces is startling.

Matthew Huppatz, Help ease, push/pull
Matthew Huppatz's work is designed to look like 'helpless furniture' while Louise Irving's textiles take unlikely inspiration from travel guide treks.

Louise Irving, Hike #1 Morudo to Kamikochi; Hike #2 Kurama to Kibune; Hike #3 Atago-san 2008
Hatched is on at all galleries of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, until June 7.
